A double album of laidback house and Balearic beats direct from one of Ibiza's coolest hangouts - compiled by Pete Gooding and Afterlife.
Cafe Mambo in Ibiza: Beautifully located on the waterfront and celebrated as THE place to kick back to some sublime sounds before the night's activity takes shape, Mambo is revered for bringing together a unique international crowd and some of the world's favourite DJs and club promoters for the ultimate pre-parties.
For this compilation long serving Mambo resident and Ibiza institution Pete Gooding (crowned the island's best DJ in recent years) is joined by chillout don Steve Miller, better known as Afterlife. Together they have dug deep in their collections to compile 2 CDs of the finest laidback house and down tempo Balearic beats on the planet - from well known names to undiscovered gems this is the true sound of sunset Ibiza, Mambo style. Beautiful Day Without You (Rex The Dog Remix) Starts electric, laidback feel with lots of strange 'futuristic' sounds, very different from the original. Changes instruments very often, which makes it kind of eclectic to my opinion, i'm not very enthousiast about this one, though it might have to grow on me.
Beautiful Day Without You (Cass And Mangan Mix) Sounds a bit like Romantikske Sloyd, I like it how they made Beautiful Face instead of Beautiful day. It's kind of a disco mix of Beautiful day without you, Lots of bleeps again - sounds like a commodore 64. Definately a re-mix.
Beautiful Day Without You (Wighnomy And Robag Whruhmes Spekkfakkel Remikks) This one is very very chill, like you'd expect the röyksopp guys themselves to do it. A track suitable for Cafe Del Mar, Sounds nice.
None of the remixes topped the original. The spring-ish feeling of the original is untouchable, and none of the mixes uses the bridge 'when, i'm alone..' or the great chord changes that are in the original. The Wighnomy mix is the best out of 3, but still not great, with a maximum of 3 stars out of 5.

" Summertime"
It was back in early 2003 that Yam Who? releases first started appearing in the record shops, firstly with their re-work of N'Dambi's 'Call Me' followed closely by the now seminal 'Reach The Sky', their re-edit of Raphael Saadiq's 'Skyy, Can You Feel Me'.
In the past couple of years they have been nothing short of prolific, working with some of the best labels and artists on the underground and commercial black music scene across a variety of musical styles encompassing Jazz, Soul, Hip Hop, House, R'n'B and Broken Beat. In amongst those artists to receive the Yam Who? treatment you'll find the likes of Pharrell Williams (Frontin'), Little Brother (Make Me Hot), Alison Crockett (U R & Like Rain), Amp Fiddler (Dreamin'), Zero 7 (Somersault), Incognito (Show Me Love), Rodney P (The Nice Up), Bebel Gilberto (Baby) & John Legend (Used To Love You) to name just a few.
2005 saw them release their first original production with a cover of L.A. Boppers 'Wrap You Up' (Ubiquity Records) and this year they plan to release a compilation of their re-works.
The man with the golden voice, Noel McKoy, came to prominence in the 90's as singer, songwriter, band leader and producer with his 'family' band McKoy as well as via his collaborations with Jazz/funk legends The James Taylor Quartet.
His stunning soulful voice has led him to perform with the likes of Nu Colours, Snowboy, Sounds of Blackness, Courtney Pine, Juliet Roberts, Mica Paris and Beverley Knight to name but a few. Noel's collaboration with Yam Who? don't stop here either as they have done one of the mixes on Bluey (Incognito) & Noel's version of Donny Hathaway's classic 'One Day We'll All Be Free' out now on Expansion. Noel also has a track coming out on deVice in collaboration with Richard Salter, a self penned song titled 'Time'.
You can catch Noel at the Jazz Cafe throughout April opening for Incognito and in May hosting two nights for the Stevie Wonder Birthday tribute, and his latest album 'Cut From The Same Cloth' is due for release in mid June.
