NIGHT DRIVE MUSIC.....

Thursday, April 26, 2007

Launched in 1996 by Peter Jarvis aka
DJ Peace Harvest, now owned and operated by
Melleny Melody and Musta Costa Fortune Inc.,
Toronto-based Play Records has become one
of Canada’s foremost labels for deep house and
downtempo music and an internationally
recognized purveyor of “new, fresh and
original vibes for the dancefloor”.

Play Records represents the best in
underground music geared for both
the dancefloor and the headspace.
Originally, Play Records took its cue
from the U.K.-based trip hop/breaks
scene and began licensing music from
small European labels like Dorado,
Orange Egg, Ninja Tune and Wall of Sound.
This move provided the company with
a primary source of material.

Play Records continues to lead
Canada's deep house and downtempo
music business. Keeping its eye on the
growing national and international demand
for original songs and infinitely talented
performing artists, it's expanding and increasing
its market profile. In keeping with the label's goal
to be a world leader in its music niche,
the company recently opened a new
specialty music division called
Gay Records that brings the best
in kitchy techno-lounge-discodance tunes.
It represents a more selective release
schedule and targeted A&R operations.
Gay released the 'poptacular-extravo-techno-ganza'
and the 'Bad Gurrlz' compilation.
Next up: an eclectro-trashy project
featuring MelleeFresh and Dirty 30.

A well-respected publishing company,
Play Records’ music roster also continues
to be a substantial source of soundtrack
material for numerous commercial
productions, including 10 licensing
deals with the hit Showtime series
Queer As Folk. The label has also
licensed and produced tracks for commercial
use to Seven-Up, Aveda Cosmetics,
Kraft and Kelloggs.

Play also provides music tracks to
many productions for Nelvana,
one of the largest animation companies
in the world. Queer As Folk, in particular,
has elevated special international interest
in the label's house and uptempo catalogue, w
hich can be heard on this website. A recent collaboration with SpydaBrownSound
will bring forth many new developments
in in-house studio production, headed
up by DJ SpydaBrown.
The future for Play Records sees
the label releasing a consistent flow
of 12"s and CD albums (including both
compilations and solo projects).
The wholly Canadian-owned label also
continues to tour international and Play
artists from Europe, the U.S. and across Canada. Make sure to get added onto the mailing list,
so we can keep you in touch with news
about new releases and events.

Zoo Brazil – by name John Andersson and Johan Emmoth from Sweden produced the first Harthouse Mannheim – release for the rebirth of the legendary Harthouse - imprint and last year released their LP "Zoo Brazil Needs You" which rapidly became a milestone in electronic music history. More than 100 single releases and 40 remixes, projects with Fatboy Slim, Human League, James Holden, Blaze and countless more international acts lead to a point where they nearly achieved everything. So they decided to raise the bar for their productions once more – from now on being two steps ahead and still standing in the middle of the circle. "Video Rockets" is what they call it and it's obviously one of the best productions ever made. A Night Out In Amsterdam
(Luxury House)
Amsterdam – is there a city crazier, freer,
more laid-back than the Dutch capital?
Famous for its unique offerings that attract revellers
from all over the planet who enjoy the liberal spirit
and the great culture, Amsterdam has turned
into a number one party spot. Which, naturally,
makes it the ideal destination for Jérome,
the German house DJ who created his own series
of mixes aptly named after party hot spots,
inviting guest DJs to join him on his funky trip.
Two years ago, DJ Jérome, also known for his
Luxury House Mixes that stand for sophisticated
partying in a spirited way, got behind the
decks with Gianni N. to mix the compilation
“Eivissa pres. by Gianni N. und Jérome” which
perfectly captured the spirit of this sun-drenched
island in an authentic way.
Now, in 2007, he teams up with colleague
Vincent van Borgen, a local newcomer who knows
all the secret hotspots of his city, Amsterdam.
Together they musically guide the listener
through the pulsating party capital, spinning
fresh tracks by authentic artists like DJ Pippi,
Peter Presta, Yonderboi, Lenny Fontana,
Claude Monnet and Rene Breitbarth and even
one production by Jérome and his studio
friend Zamrate. The mix, a 74-minute homage
to crazy, vocal driven, slightly messy house nights
in one of the most breathtaking cities Europe has to offer
, is perfectly capturing the essence of its electric
party vibe which Jérome, a true DJ veteran
and party trooper, loves to spread wherever he plays.
Lifting up mood and spirit, the energetic yet
light-hearted “Amsterdam” mix is the perfect
companion for a trip to the Dam. Get ready to
get down to the take off between the worlds.

As usual, for the 10th anniversary issue of
the successful compilation series "Science Fiction Jazz",
music freak Robert Jan Meyer a.k.a. Minus 8 applies
all tracks for the primeness to the topical music scene.
"Science Fiction Jazz" detects new trends, developed
by future oriented artists. Again, the compilation
creates new high-class standards. This time,
Minus 8 takes you in a strong grip from the first
track to the last and manages to keep on
surprising you: you'll find smooth & jazzy bits, female vocals,
Acid Jazz inspired songs, cool-cat New Jazz traces,
Latin influences, Hip Hop beats, organ, sax and xylophone,
airy guitars leading into a catchy Drum'n'Bass track,
abstract sounds and intimate songs - a journey into
a satisfying and inspiring universe of today's music production.
Each listener will discover two amazing things.
First: everyone will find his or her very special pearl.
Second: the tracklisting is so smartly arranged, that you
want to hear the compilation all over again.
Take it as a promise - you will remember what you hear!
With tracks by K`Bonus, Zero dB, Nightmares on Wax,
Airmate feat. Mozez, Lindstrom & Prins Thomas,
Koop, J Dilla, Minus 8 himself and many more.

The Timewriter - Resensed Part One
Time to re-write history:
The house legend Jean F. Cochois a.k.a. The Timewriter,
possibly one of the most sought-after house artists the
German deephouse scene has brought forward in the
last ten years, has left his mark by producing four absolute
stunning long players,Letters from the Jester,
Jigsaw Pieces, Diary of A Lonely Sailor and Paintbox,
published between 1995 and 2006.
All of them of distinct
quality with tracks of such delicate,
honest beauty that they bring people to tears.
Songs that will never be forgotten as they, with their
timeless spirituality, would turn into genre classics.
To give his work a new context and to recall some
of The Timewriter’s finest moments, Plastic City label
gave his thumbs-up for “Resensed Part One”,
asking acclaimed musicians and newcomer producers
alike to give the already complete masterpieces the
Midas re-touch. The result, a first sequel of remixes
that are now published on Timewriter haven
Plastic City are at least as fascinating as thee eight
original tracks and will equally appeal to those
die-hard The Timewriter fans as well as those
who discover him for the very first time.
With great sensuality and a lot of joy, a whole
bunch of top class producers hailing from all
parts of the planet has re-rubbed eight carefully
selected tracks. They range from the breathtaking
“Here Comes The Sun”, one of the highlights of the
second album Jigsaw Pieces, to the amazing Paintbox
track “Room of A Million Rainbows” that only recently
has been released as a single, remixed by Athens
based producer Mikael Delta. The tracks were
reworked by, amongst others, Philadelphia’s finest
King Britt, the outstanding German house producer
Ian Pooley, one of the icons of the national house scene,
and exciting new faces and fresh talents such as
Jesse Somfay and Dave Spoon whose remix of
the dazzling anthem “Reachin’ Out” equally touches
heart and soul as well as from JFC´s labelmate and
friend Terry Lee Brown Junior. The styles range
from deep, electric mind trips to housey floor workouts.
The remixers, united by a heart-knowing instinct
to capture the very essence of every track and
shape it into something completely new and contemporary,
are adding new facets to an already accomplished sound:
Resensed Part One.
