Amerie - Take Control
The line on Amerie is she's a second-tier R&B diva,
yet somehow she always manages to put out singles
that Beyoncé would, and probably has, killed for.
"Take Control" is another one. While B was busy
sobbing in videos and making the campiest record since
the Hedwig soundtrack, Amerie went subtle.
Co-produced with Cee-Lo, the guitar riff admittedly
bites Cake, but by the time Amerie's tied-up-in-silk
singing darts around those licks, you hopefully
won't be thinking about bald white dudes, unless
that's your jam. Amerie isn't treading new ground
lyrically, but I don't think anyone expects that from her.
She's making a hot little 80s funk throwback concept
record, her voice and the production both feigning
the strain of submission for fun instead of
channeling neuroses through melisma.
