NIGHT DRIVE MUSIC.....

Thursday, April 26, 2007

Launched in 1996 by Peter Jarvis aka
DJ Peace Harvest, now owned and operated by
Melleny Melody and Musta Costa Fortune Inc.,
Toronto-based Play Records has become one
of Canada’s foremost labels for deep house and
downtempo music and an internationally
recognized purveyor of “new, fresh and
original vibes for the dancefloor”.

Play Records represents the best in
underground music geared for both
the dancefloor and the headspace.
Originally, Play Records took its cue
from the U.K.-based trip hop/breaks
scene and began licensing music from
small European labels like Dorado,
Orange Egg, Ninja Tune and Wall of Sound.
This move provided the company with
a primary source of material.

Play Records continues to lead
Canada's deep house and downtempo
music business. Keeping its eye on the
growing national and international demand
for original songs and infinitely talented
performing artists, it's expanding and increasing
its market profile. In keeping with the label's goal
to be a world leader in its music niche,
the company recently opened a new
specialty music division called
Gay Records that brings the best
in kitchy techno-lounge-discodance tunes.
It represents a more selective release
schedule and targeted A&R operations.
Gay released the 'poptacular-extravo-techno-ganza'
and the 'Bad Gurrlz' compilation.
Next up: an eclectro-trashy project
featuring MelleeFresh and Dirty 30.

A well-respected publishing company,
Play Records’ music roster also continues
to be a substantial source of soundtrack
material for numerous commercial
productions, including 10 licensing
deals with the hit Showtime series
Queer As Folk. The label has also
licensed and produced tracks for commercial
use to Seven-Up, Aveda Cosmetics,
Kraft and Kelloggs.

Play also provides music tracks to
many productions for Nelvana,
one of the largest animation companies
in the world. Queer As Folk, in particular,
has elevated special international interest
in the label's house and uptempo catalogue, w
hich can be heard on this website. A recent collaboration with SpydaBrownSound
will bring forth many new developments
in in-house studio production, headed
up by DJ SpydaBrown.
The future for Play Records sees
the label releasing a consistent flow
of 12"s and CD albums (including both
compilations and solo projects).
The wholly Canadian-owned label also
continues to tour international and Play
artists from Europe, the U.S. and across Canada. Make sure to get added onto the mailing list,
so we can keep you in touch with news
about new releases and events.
